Nestled directly in between Dallas and Fort Worth, Arlington is part of the Mid-Cities region. It’s the second-largest city in Tarrant County, and the seventh-largest city in Texas, with a population of just under 400,000—and growing. The proximity to Dallas-Fort Worth offers a range of activities for young and old both in the city and farther north into DFW.
The diverse population, above-average schools, and more affordable housing options make it a viable alternative to Dallas and Fort Worth and a great place to raise a family.
Downtown Arlington offers a vibrant local foodie scene, a calendar of events with something for everyone, and a cultural district that seeks to promote and expand the city’s art scene.
Education
There are five independent school districts (ISD) in Arlington, with additional private and charter schools available. Arlington ISD has a total of ten schools alone.
Arlington is also an ideal place for those interested in higher education. For public education, the largest is the University of Texas at Arlington, with over 45,000 students. UT Arlington is the fourth largest university in the state. Tarrant County College also has a campus in Arlington, offering curricula in culinary arts, drama/theater, engineering, and hospital management.
Two private universities also have campuses in Arlington: The University of Phoenix, and Arlington Baptist University, a Bible college, that offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Working In Arlington
Three of the largest companies in the US have offices in Arlington: JPMorgan Chase & Co., GM Financial (headquartered in Fort Worth), and General Motors. Arlington’s largest employer is Arlington ISD, with more than 8,000 employees.
These companies join Texas Health Resources, one of the largest faith-based healthcare providers in the US, and the largest in North Texas. Texas Health Resources manages 22 hospitals, 17 behavioral health centers, and three neighborhood wellness centers.
Six Flags over Texas, The Parks at Arlington, The City of Arlington, and the Texas Rangers Baseball team round out the top ten employers here. Thousands of smaller companies have job opportunities available, with more than 17,000 currently listed on Indeed.
Short-distance shuttles are also predicted to make it easier to get from hotels to DFW airport, around college and university campuses, and other routes. For those who prefer bicycling throughout Arlington, free bike racks are located throughout both Downtown Arlington and UT Arlington.)
